Faringdon will play host to its second Swap Shop as one of the inaugural events of Faringdon ECOWEEK.
It follows the tremendously successful event on 8th March, when swappers were out in droves, bringing, taking or swapping, all for free. Visitors saved over 400kg of assorted stuff from landfill, including books, videos, clothing, bric-a-brac and even some rolls of carpet!
There was also the facility to recycle print cartridges, foil, batteries and reading glasses. Refreshments provided by Faringdon Pre-School raised £25 for funds through donations, and local children were entertained by the balloon-bending skills of Simon the Stilt Man, though they were also busy swapping their toys too! The Swap Shop was one of over a dozen held around the county attracting over 3000 people and recycling/rescuing an amazing 12 tonnes of goods.
The events were organised by by Faringdon Waste Watchers, part of the volunteer-led Community Action Group network (CAG) that works within Oxfordshire to save resources and reduce the amount going to landfill. The Faringdon Swap Shop was definitely a big hit with people keen to load up their reusable bags, once they’d accepted the idea that everything was free! The winner of the compost bin for guessing the amount saved from landfill was Terry Jones from Southmoor.
