Organic Bacon Butties

Did you know that Organic Beef typically has a carbon footprint that is 60% lower than conventionally farmed beef? And organically farmed free-range pigs really do give you better tasting bacon - according to Heston Blumenthal?

What makes the perfect Bacon Butty?

Researchers at Leeds University spent more than 1,000 hours testing 700 variants on the traditional bacon sandwich, which most Britons refer to as a bacon butty (eschewing the term sandwich, said to have been coined to honor the fourth Earl of Sandwich’s habit of eating meat between slices of bread around 1762).

For Britons, butties come in a variety of guises — chip butties, crisp butties or even fried mars bar butties. None are viewed as especially healthy, and the bacon butty also has tarnished health credentials- partly by association. Meat eating also causes problems in other ways. The developed nations’ addiction to high meat diets is a major cause of environmental stress - with rainforests being turned into pasture, and food crops going to feed burger factories. Yes - humans have evolved as omnivores - but in the rich countries we typically consume twenty times more meat than our bodies have been designed for.

HOWEVER - if you’re going to enjoy the pleasures of crispy bacon, then you may as well make sure that it’s the tastiest local organic free-range bacon, in a roll that’s made from local wholemeal organic wheat - ground in a local water-powered wheat mill. And then washed down with a mug of hot milky Fairtrade Coffee - using local organic milk of course!
