The ECOWEEK kicks off on the opening Saturday with Faringdon’s second ECOSWAP (Swap Shop – Bring, Take, Swap), a big ECOFAIR (bringing together eco-suppliers and eco-organisations) and ECOVEG (open allotments and local food) . The final event of the week will a WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT and a sunny celebration of the Summer Solstice at Westmill Windfarm.
|
Along the way, there are high profile ECOTALKS with celebrity speakers; tours around Energy-from-Waste facilities in Swindon, a showing of Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth, and for the budding ornithologists - a Bird & Farm Walk. Friar’s Court at Clanfield and Venn Mill at Garford will be holding Eco-Open Days; and the ECOTRAIL gives you permission to be nosey and visit dozens of premises in and around Faringdon that have interesting eco-credentials.
Under the ECOSCHOOLS banner, the schools will also be taking an active part in the ECOWEEK, as will the Churches.
And - on the final Saturday of the ECOWEEK – the longest solar-powered day of the year – the ECOBIKES (a peloton of amateur cyclists – all abilities and ages welcome) will set off from the Marketplace first thing in the morning, going around a selection of ECOFARMS (there are fourteen organic farms within just two miles of Faringdon…), stopping briefly for an ECOBUTTY and ending up at ECOWIND – the newly commissioned Westmill Wind Farm.
More than 3000 people are expected to attend the Windfarm Open Day on the 20th of June, where at 2pm precisely - on Mid-Summer’s Day - there will also be ECOWORLD – an attempt to break the wind-turbine-hugging world record (the largest number of people who can hug a single wind turbine simultaneously) – under the watchful eye of one of Mr McWhirter’s successors.
